Driver training at Narbethong |
Most
club members are parents and former parents of Wesley students. The main
objective of the Club is to enjoy four wheel driving in a relaxed, friendly and
convivial atmosphere. The standard of trips varies from very easy to quite
challenging, with some trips being undertaken to the most remote parts of
Australia. The Club also runs both informal and formal driver training
sessions through the Victorian Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs. You don't
have to be an expert to join, new members with little or no experience are most
welcome. If you want to "have a go" before you embark on kitting out your
vehicle and yourself with a load of equipment then come along on one of our
Sunday trips. The Club has a certain amount of gear including hand-held two way
radios, a flying doctor radio, a hand winch and tyre pliers that can be used by
members. |

Each year we hold a number of easy one day
trips, some long weekends, a few longer interstate trips as well as a number
of social gatherings. The basic kit
The minimum safety/recovery kit you need to go off road includes a "snatchem"
strap (about $60), a couple of 3¼ tonne certified shackles and a UHF CB radio.
UHF radios start at about $99 for a simple hand-held unit from Dick Smith. These
have a range of about 3km and the Club can lend you one for your first trip. If
you are going to take off roading seriously you will need a vehicle mounted
radio. A good quality set like the Uniden
UH-100 illustrated
below has
a range of up to 20kms or more and will set you back $369.00. A good antenna
will cost another $75. The staff at Telstat Communications in Seaford are very knowledgeable
and give a discount to Club members. The club policy is to use UHF CB rather
than 27Mhz. Our call up and communications channel is Channel 27. Some members
have been known to have regular conversations in the morning on the way to work!
When it comes to camping gear the sky's the
limit. You can kit yourself out for a few hundred dollars, or you can spend
thousands! Talk to any of our members and they will be delighted to bend your
ear.
