Pineapple Flat and
High Country Huts
January 2004

Our group assembled in
Coldstream at the civilized hour of 9:30 on Wednesday 14th January.
After a pleasant drive through Yea and up
the
Goulburn Valley we stopped for morning tea in Mansfield, finally arriving at
Pineapple Flat in time for a late lunch. Much to our relief the camp site was
virtually deserted with only one other group there, so we were able to take our
traditional camp site right on the King River. We spent the first afternoon
generally setting up camp and getting everything ship shape as we had decided to
spend the entire four nights at Pineapple Flat and do day trips. As campsites go
Pineapple Flat has everything. It’s very pretty, there are good grassy flats by
the river, there’s an endless supply of superb mountain water, lots of fire wood
and a drop dunny. On the Thursday we did a day trip along the King basin to King
Hut and then up to Craigs Hut where we had lunch with a 360º panoramic view of
the High Country peaks. Friday some went to Lake Cobbler while others stayed at
the campsite for a day’s fishing, which was rudely interrupted by a short but
very heavy thunderstorm. Then on Saturday we did a trip to Bindouree Falls and
Bindouree Hut, which is another great campsite and well worth remembering for a
future trip. The last time the Club went there was Easter 1995 so it’s time for
another visit.
The trip will be
remembered for very pleasant weather – well, most of the time; quiet uncrowded
campsites and tracks, and very pleasant evenings around the campfire sharing
good food, good wine and great company.
On a final note, we set up one the new club assets – the privacy tent and 12
volt shower. A bucket of river water topped up with a billy of boiling water
provides a very satisfactory five minute shower at just the right temperature.
This was very much appreciated by the female members of the group and some of
the males who were too woosey to take a plunge in the icy waters of the King
River!
